The slow life awaits an hour out of Bangkok.

Weara Waree 2499 hotel (099-048-8899, goo.gl/FElykg) is something quite new for Amphawa: a charming riverside hotel far from the market that takes over an old wooden house dating to 1956.

There are four bedrooms, three with air-conditioning (B2,000-2,500/night) and one with a fan (B800/night), but you can actually rent out the whole house at B6,300/night for groups of up to eight.

Sitting on the banks of the Mae Klong River, this one’s best-suited to people who like the rural life, taking an hour’s drive to reach from Bangkok.

Take your barbecue dinners on the riverside terrace, wake early to khai kata with minced pork and Chinese sausage for breakfast, and make use of the hotel’s boat service for river exploration and fishing trips (B800/hour or B6,000 for an overnight fishing trip).

Do note that the hotel only accepts one group of guests per night.
