3 exciting all-new reasons to head back to Phuket
Keeping things fresh.
If you skipped Phuket these past couple long weekends, it's time to put it back on your list. With a slew of hip and happening new openings, the southern Thai island is ready for a revisit. Whether you're into healthy eating, fancy spa-ing or just taking stylish selfies at boutique hotels, it's time to book your flight.
Phuket Town’s latest boutique hotel, 2Rooms Boutique House (+66 (0) 7635-4335), is a hipster’s dream—and it offers only two rooms. Yes, that’s right. Designed and owned by Phuket's Dhamarchitects, those rooms are situated on the second floor of a 100-year-old twin shop-house on Soi Rommanee that was formerly an old-school coffee shop. The Sino-Portuguese shop-house stands out not only for its bright pink facade, but also its relatively shallow nature compared to others in the area. The large, suite-like rooms consist of dark blue walls, king bed and breezy balcony. What they lack in the way of a TV, they make up for with a turntable and a set of vinyl records from the likes of The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel and The Rolling Stones. Downstairs you’ll find popular dessert cafe Torry’s Ice cream. The current opening promotion sees rates slashed 30% from $120 to $84.
Phuket's Iniala, possibly Thailand's most luxurious resort, recently welcomed Esenzi, a refined seafood restaurant led by Tim Butler of Bangkok's Eat Me fame, where an eight-course tasting menu will set you back $320. But its latest opening takes a decidedly more casual route. Iniala Kitchen and Bar (+66 (0) 7660-2308), which is located next to Iniala Gourmet cafe and bakery at Boat Avenue Cherngtalay, not the resort itself, focuses on casual sharing dishes with Mediterranean touches drawn from group executive chef Sandro Aguilera’s Spanish roots. The menu therefore centers on tartine (open-face sandwiches, from $11), ceviche (from $8) and other tapas-sized dishes, as well as roasted free-range chicken with three marination options (from $16/half bird). The blue-and-white, Mediterranean-evoking decor is matched by dishes like grilled halloumi cheese with avocado, tomato, arugula, mint and bulgur ($12) and Challans duck breast with corn and apple-stuffed ravioli ($16). Upstairs sits a lounge, where Italian bar manager Stefano Rossini serves twisted classic cocktails from $8. Try Sombrero No. 2 (Jimador teguila, martini rosso, Choya umeshu, Granacha wine, $12) or the Old Fashioned Gon'Tiki (dark rum, orange curacao, homemade banana syrup, chocolate bitters, tiki bitters. $11).
After unveiling new farm-to-table restaurant Pru, Northern Phuket pool villa-only resort Trisara has renamed, renovated and relaunched its spa. The six villa-like spa rooms at Jara offer four different signature mixed oils and what they dub a “Thai thermal massage,” which features a clay pot filled with heated Himalayan salt and incorporates elements of meditation. The five-hour Jara Local treatment includes a Thai herbal scrub and wrap, Thai thermal massage, Thai stretching (Rue Sri Dat Ton) and walking meditation by Buddhist monks—yours for $621 (or $1,202 per couple). Other options include the 90-minute Royal Trisara six-hand massage, which combines Thai and Swedish massage techniques at $597. We recommend requesting a sea-view spa room. Book here with Agoda!
