11 days of the best of Southeast Asia’s street food

We seem to be in a renaissance of street food appreciation. First there was the Tiger Street Food Festival that celebrated the next generation of local hawkers; then Singapore Food Festival announced the return of the ever-popular 50 Cents Fest; and now, Resorts World Sentosa’s own heartland-centric gastronomic affair is back.

RWS Street Eats returns in its second edition from Aug 9-19 at the Malaysian Food Street in RWS. That’s 11 whole days of gorging on some of the best hawkers and eateries from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and our own little island. Joining the original eight stalls at Malaysian Food Street, the invited local and regional hawkers will bring the total to a whopping 29 stalls; we dare you to not be able to find something to eat.

It’s probably a no-brainer that the queues will be focused on the 11 overseas cooks. Plan early on who you want to taste from—there’s Pork Star Bali from Indonesia with Balinese style pork dishes; Jakarta favorite Waroeng Kita with ayam penyet belado (smashed fried chicken with spicy sambal); Hong Cha from Kuala Lumpur whipping up pork noodle soup; and Baan Phad Thai from Bangkok whose take on the Thai classic has apparently been voted one of the best in the country. Dishes start from $2; or average $6 a plate. Tiger Beer will even set up a beer garden for the complete rough-and-tough street dining experience.

There must be some SG53 conspiracy involved, what with the fair starting on Aug 9; but if you’d rather spend your day at RWS than getting hyped for the parade, the opening day will kick off at 9:30am with a flying roti canai performance by Malaysian chefs Zainal Abidin and Mohd Fairus. Bizarre, but RWS keeps it fresh. Otherwise, the fair will run from 11am-9pm, with a few options like Phad Thai, Sempalit Curry Chicken and drinks available from 9am. You might want to rethink your National Day long weekend getaway.
