Italian-themed bars, whisky lounges, Japanese craft beer, salads in a jar and lots more.

Another month, another half-dozen new places to eat and drink at in Singapore. September is heavy on the bars, with an aperitif joint, a Japanese craft beer and a whisky lounge in the cards. On the food front, it's hearty sandwiches, salads in a jar and more. Happy eating and drinking, Singapore.

Baba Chews Bar & Eatery

Baba Chews Bar and Eatery is housed in Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, a 131-room hotel that recently took over one of Singapore's heritage buildings—the Joo Chiat Police Station, built in 1938. The all-dining restaurant merits a special look-see because of its lovely interiors and Peranakan-heavy menu. Try local delights like the mouth-watering ayam buah keluak (chicken braised in a thick, spicy tamarind gravy with buah keluak nus) and foie gras tau kwa pau. If you're in need of a caffeine fix, they also offer coffee made from roasted beans from local specialty roaster, Common Man Coffee Roasters, and tea from TWG.

Le Binchotan

That Gemmill Lane back alley is really getting exciting, with its row of non-descript backdoors leading into lovely restaurants. The latest to be added to the bunch is Le Binchotan. Helmed by Chef Atsuhiko Hagiwara who previously led Ginza establishment en.terrible, the Amoy Street restaurant lives up to its name by specializing in meat and seafood grilled over bincho-tan (or white charcoal). Highlights from the menu include foie gras shavings with oden-style daikon ($21), wagyu striploin infused with port wine and ume plum liqueur ($15), and Japanese red bream atop cold-smoked eggplant with a dash of shoyu ($25).

Craft Beer Bar Takumi

JiBiru is taking its beers beyond 313@somerset with the opening of sister outlet Craft Beer Bar Takumi at the Mandarin Orchard Hotel. Takumi is essentially a Tokyo-style hole-in-the-wall bar minus the claustrophobia, and serves beers like the Hitachino Nest White Ale (from $9.50 a glass during happy hour), Shiga Kogen Pale Ale (from $10.50 a glass during happy hour) and Owa ($16.50 a bottle). Adding to that, they have a focus on limited edition and barrel-aged beers like Kuro Owa Grand Cru 2013 aged in Bordeaux wine barrels ($58 for a 750ml bottle) and Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA ($21 a bottle). Happy hour runs until 9pm each day.

DRINK

How about a taste of la dolce vita right on Club Street? Italian restaurant has reopened The S Bar, taking visual cues form 1950s Italian glam: floor-to-ceiling black mirrors, red sofas and on-theme cocktails like the Negroni ($20), the Romantico ($20) and of course that summer favorite the Aperol Spritz ($18). Don't miss the weekday happy hour where beers, house wines, Prosecco and spirits are $10 between 5:30-8pm. Get the Italian-leaning bar bites too, such as cheese and cold cut platters, the arrancini (which come stuffed with mozzarella or beef ragout) and home marinated sardines with Sicilian lemon and shallots. More here.

Hungry Bazterdz

Hip local coffee roasters Nomad the Gallant, who supply to some of our favorite cafes with retail beans through their online store and hold classes and food pop-ups around town, have added a new venture to their name. The menu at Hungry Bazterdz is brief and straightforward, featuring their delicious coffee along with sandwiches like the Fat Chicken (chicken strips with garlic aioli and pickled veggies) and the Grand Poobah, a six-hour braised pulled beef in jus with cheddar cheese, both served in toasted brioche buns. Vegetarians, get the Falafal Marinara. Wash them down with Nomad's cold brew coffee, a Thai iced tea or a matcha latte.

Jar'd

CBD drones, if you were getting bored of your health food bowls, why not try a health food... jar? The opening of Jar'd at One Raffles Place, by the Sarnie's people, has all the makings: it's healthy, it's got a recycling component and it involves that ol' hipster talisman, the mason jar. Dressings and protein go at the bottom where they do little damage to the rest of your crunchy ingredients. Just shake the jar up when you're ready to eat. Salads come in either 750ml or 1 liter jars, and options include the tuna tataki, quinoa and feta and roast chicken and pesto (all $12.50/16). If you return your jar once you're done, you get $1 off your next salad.

Quaich

After nine years of spreading the word of good whisky from their home at Grand Copthorne Waterfront, Quaich Bar has opened a second outlet. Set in South Beach Avenue, the retail section of the exciting new South Beach development, the interior of Quaich Bar at South Beach is dominated by what they call a “whisky light”, glass shelves filled with the whiskies they stock backlit by a white crystal light diffuser. There are over 500 whiskies – including some of the oldest and rarest – available by the glass. Exciting drams include the rich, fruity Springbank 16 Year Old Local Barley ($38), the spicy Kilkerran Calvados Single Cask ($37) which is limited to just 60 bottles in Singapore .
