Here's what to expect at the first-ever Gelato World Tour
Local stores are competing with international biggies for the title of World's Best Gelato.
Gelato love is reaching a fever pitch in Singapore these days, with a bunch of new gelato bars popping up. First off, there's the high-tech +39 gelato bar on Circular Road, whipping up flavors like tahini with dates, and balsamic vinegar jelly. Momolato, on the other hand, experiments with classic childhood flavors like toasted marshmallow and Belgian chocolate.
Need more proof? These two places and a whopping 14 others will be participating in the Gelato World Tour (Mar 20-22) this weekend at Marina Bay Sands. You'll be able to taste 16 different flavors all vying for the title of "World's Best Gelato". International contenders include flavors like burnt butter with toffee almond brittle from Australia's Yamba Icecreamery and Thailand's kopi fah sun thong made with almond-hazelnut brittle, espresso, caramel and sesame. Representing home are stores like Tom's Palette with a Kochi Popz flavor made with yuzu and popping candy, as well as Fatcat Ice Cream Bar's icy interpretation of the Singapore Sling.
Plus, there are workshops on how to taste and make gelato, a screening of Gelatology (you guessed it, a film all about gelato) and Singapore's first gelato university where you can enroll in a four-week crash course of gelato-making.
