It doesn't get as much love and attention as other cultures prevalent in Singapore, such as Japanese, Korean and American, but Caribbean food, drink and especially dance parties are more regular than ever, with at least five events happening in August. So whether you're into reggae, salsa or just love rum cocktails, soak up tropical Caribbean culture at one of these.

Reggae Open Mic and Jam Session

Kult Kafe is doing regular reggae open mic sessions that start at a respectable 4pm, with a barbecue, before continuing with an outdoor set by live band Jam Rebel and the open mic and jam session at 7pm. Things conclude with a proper indoor dance session with Big Up! Sound System. The next one is Aug 13. 

Tropical Temple: Adelante Edition

DJ Bhayology has been heading up the Tropical Temple parties for a couple years now, along with his partners in crime. Sadly he's going on indefinite hiatus, and if you're a fan, this sweaty dance party at Blu Jaz is your last chance to see him. He and DJ Kusto will be spinning Carribean, Latin and African tunes along with a bunch of other world beats. Aug 19

Havana Social Club

Headed by Cuban drummer Pablo Calzado Morales, the Havana Social Club, specializing in Cuban and Latin music, brings live acts with intimate vibes to, where else, Blu Jaz. This time, the band is working with British singer Karen. It's $15 to get in and starts at 9pm. Get a feel for their sound here. Aug 13

Caribbean Block Party

Urban Ventures (who closed Keong Saik to traffic a few months ago for an all-day street party) and the epicenter of Caribbean food and drink in Singapore, Lime House, are joinng forces for this pedestrian shindig on Jiak Chuan. There will be live music, salsa shows, a limbo competition, a special barbecue menu and $12 rum cocktails. No cover. Aug 20

Afro Latin Fever

Learn all about Caribbean and Latin musical styles such as bachata, salsa and zouk at the second edition of this all-in-one quarterly dance party happening at Converge Studios on Cecil Street. Twelve DJs will spin from 9pm to 1am, and it's only $12 to get in. One major downside: no alcohol. Aug 27
