Bangkok's 5 newest rooftop bars to try out this weekend
Weekend plans still up in the air? Here are some sky-high new venues to check out.
555/27 Sukhumvit Soi 39. 086-365-6656 and 094-965-3654.
Set on the fifth floor of the new Taka town, Monde boasts a garden-like vibe with its fake grass, built-in roof to deal with the rain, faux leather sofas and cushions. To go with the the sheesha-friendly mood, you can order mixes of flavors like Sweet Night (grape, strawberry, bubble gum and mint) and Unicorn Pop (strawberry, bubble gum, peach and grape, B500).The bar food covers Asian favorites like pad thai and fusion sushi and maki rolls all the way through to Italian pizza and pastas. Signature cocktails are concocted by an in-house mixologist who has worked in Thonglor bars like Bottoms Up. Or if you’re more into beer, Singha is also available on tap.
3/F, Nihonmura Mall, Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor). 02-185-3385.
Headed by Chef Noriyuki Sugie, 8 Owls rolls out creative and artsy dishes like scallop ceviche (B380), toro tartare (minced caviar with truffle oil and white and fatty tuna, B1,200) and oyster shooter (oyster with quail egg, spicy daikon and ponzu, B200). The eatery's bar vibe, provided by a preponderance of steel and wood, also makes it a cozy hangout in which to drink the many selections of draft Hitachino Nest Beer.
35/F, Fraser Suites, Sukhumvit, 38/8 Sukhumvit Soi 11, 083-542-1111.
The new and cozy Gramercy takes its inspiration from a New York park of the same name. In keeping with the lush concept of downstairs neighbor Above Eleven, it features lots of bright furniture in a garden vibe, plus graffiti by local artists. This is one charming place to get you in the mood of romance if food is your not your main intention that day, as the place serves up only ceviche, sushi and drinks. Signature dishes include the tiraditos octopus with white onions and olive oil (B470), spider roll (B320 for six pieces) before you sip a glass of Summer Jardin (Grey Goose, cherry blossom syrup, lime and grapefruit juice, B350).
5/F at Nakiya Japanese Restaurant Building (Opposite from Nihonmura), Thonglor Soi 13. 086-655-5328.
Sat across from 8 Owls, is another rooftop spot. Sat above Nakiya Japanese restaurant, Wanderlust is run by group of fresh graduates, including illustrator Christopher Gale whose family ran the now sadly closed The Woodstock Bar. The bar is decked out in a rooftop garden kind of style with fake grass, sets of wooden seats and cute illustrations from Chris all over. Food reads like old Woodstock favorites: BBQ pork ribs, fish and chips and the like. For now, Heineken is the only beer on tap but they also offer bottles like Beerlaos and Sapporo, too.
45-46/F Le Luk Condominium, 1595/500 Sukhumvit Rd. 02-348-9121.
The host of Duck & Noodle’s Top Deck party earlier this month, Zeppelin occupies two floors above the Le Luk Condominium right near BTS Phra Khanong. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the up-and-coming neighborhood. While the 45th floor is decked out like a proper restaurant where you can enjoy Thai-international dishes, the top deck one floor above is more laidback with lots of sofas sets from which to enjoy the night views. There's more of a party vibe come the weekend with DJs and live bands, plus special events from time to time .
