Sick of sinful hawker fare like chicken rice and char kway teow? Go for these healthy gourmet soups then.

From hotel kitchens to a plain ol' hawker space, chef Gary Lum has set up The Soup Bar in Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market and Food Centre to sell wholesome soups, pastas and salads for pocket-friendly prices.

With a price range of $4.80 to $5.80, you can choose items like minestrone with bacon, pumpkin and ginger, chicken stew with brandy, spaghetti bolognese and tuna nicoise salad. The menu does get refreshed from time to time so there'll always be something new on offer.

Lum makes the soups and pasta sauce from scratch daily and keeps his creations MSG-free.

Look out for our cover story on hipster hawkers in the next issue of I-S (Mar 14) to find out more about Lum's story, alongside other young hawkers.
