Buffets, beer, cocktails, special menus, and at least one actual snake.

Are you seeing red? Well, that’s Chinese New Year. Or conjunctivitis. But we’ll go with the first one. We didn’t spot any dragons for the entire year, which is a bit of a let down, but the Year of the Snake kicks off on January 29 and Bangkok has plenty of events on deck. With 1.35 million visitors in town, it’s time to spend those red envelopes.

One Dynasty

One Bangkok will be ringing in the Chinese New Year with performances throughout the period, including lion dances, auspicious pattern screen printing, and fortune cookie machines—which is an American thing, but who’s counting. If you’re in it for the selfies, you’ll find Boulevard Walking Street decorated with displays and lanterns. The big show is, of course, on Jan 29, with over 150 performers.

Night of the Snake at Oskar Bistro

It’s not always about family and tradition and culture—sometimes it’s just about partying. On Jan 31, Oskar Bistro, a favorite pre-club spot on Soi 11, will be putting on the Year of the Snake with a “sexy twist” and will feature DJ Ino and Pulsa on drums.

Nan Bei Feast and Tai Chi

Nan Bei gets the official BK seal of approval for being one of the few spots to be able to mix in a little dongbei food, and for Chinese New Year Chef Matthew Geng is putting on special dishes with Guzheng musicians on Jan 28-29. From Jan 27-Feb 2, the same place will be hosting "7 Days of Qigong & Tai Chi" every morning at the pool area.

New Cocktails at Blessing Shophouse

Celebrating their first year, Blessing Shophouse in Asoke is putting on three new themed cocktails for the CNY occasion, including the Mandarin Pop inspired by Teresa Teng’s “Tian Mi Mi” song and the Talking Plum with Shanghai plum candy-infused vodka.

If you want to skip all the food and head straight for the beer, Hair of the Dog—which, yes, does actually have a snake—is putting on a promotion for Jan 31 where you get a red envelope with a mystery inside for a discounted for free beer. And, from 6-10pm, there will be a real, live snake for photos and general revelry. The snake will only be at the larger Phrom Phong location.
