Freshly “sandboxed” in Phuket for two weeks, the Siam Sinfonietta will be playing Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Night on Bald Mountain, and more Russian classics on January 30, at 7pm at the Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.
"Despite—or perhaps because of—the Covid crisis, this has been a year of meteoric growth for Siam Sinfonietta," Somtow Sucharitkul, founder of Siam Sinfonietta tells BK Magazine. After touring at the Oldenburg Film Festival, the entire orchestra quarantined in Phuket at the Laguna Phuket resort and the orchestra's popularity gained them the unofficial title of "orchestra in residence" at the Laguna. "Because of Covid restrictions, programming for the Sinfonietta is tentative this year, but they have already been invited back to Germany for the next film festival. Over the next few months the orchestra will gradually be returning to the concert stage."
Going under the title “From Russia with Love,” the show will feature Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee, according to a press release from the organisation. Started in 2010, the Siam Sinfonietta is an award-winning youth orchestra and the performance will be helmed by maestros Somtow Sucharitkul, who created the group, and Trisdee na Patalung.
The group will also be performing at SF Cinema at Central world on February 7 for the theatrical release of The Maestro.
"Once opera becomes viable again, the orchestra will participate in the long awaited (and frequently postponed) Thailand premiere of Salome," the Somtow Sucharitkul tells BK Magazine via email.
The Banyan Tree concert, having previously played for two weeks at the Laguna Phuket during their musical island quarantine, will be their first in the Big Mango. Snacks will be available from Banyan Tree and ticketholders will be given coupons for the hotel’s restaurants.
Reservations are recommended, as Covid-19 restrictions necessitate limited spots.
