Suvarnabhumi Airport will be ready to open again on May 1 after a month-long closure due to the coronavirus outbreak, as domestic flights are set to resume this Friday. 

As reported by the National News Bureau of Thailand, airport director Sutheerawat Suwannawat claims the airport will be able to support all flights as before but with some adjustments corresponding to preventive measures for Covid-19, including screening facilities. 

Local budget airlines like Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air have announced that they will resume domestic operations from Suvarnabhumi on May 1, while Bangkok Airways is set to resume flights to Koh Samui on May 15, with health control and social distancing protocols to be enacted in compliance with regulations set by the Ministry of Public Health. 

With tourist arrivals and departures at an all-time low, Airports of Thailand (AOT) officials have taken advantage of the sudden slowdown, continuing their overhauls of both Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports—all in compliance with the strict rules put in place to curb the outbreak of the coronavirus. 

Last week, AOT revealed the progress of Suvarnabhumi Airport’s new passenger terminal, which includes a rail link service transiting passengers to the new satellite building, an aerobridge and a new car park on the airport’s eastern wing. 

Repairs have also been made to its concourse, elevators, lighting, air-conditioning and baggage handling systems, while broken floor tiles have been replaced, and a new visual docking guidance system, elevators and lighting systems at the airport’s parking building and office building have been installed, Bangkok Post reports.
