The Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, known for its palatial European architecture, makes a very compelling case to travel to outside of Bangkok this CNY.

Chinese New Year—arguably the most popular yearly celebration here outside of Songkran—is right around the corner, and as wild as Bangkok gets this time of year it’s sometimes nice to get out of this smoggy city, especially this month.

Macau has been a popular getaway destination for many Thais, and why not? The breezy city is easy to navigate, requires no visa, and boasts a truckload of local restaurants, bars, and other attractions. The city’s compact size and breezy walkability make it easy to see plenty of it in a single weekend.

This Chinese New Year, one of the city’s most storied and prestigious resorts, Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, is going all-out for the Year of the Snake and making a good case to get out of Bangkok this year.

What to Do

First, there are two highly thematic events happening across the property, both running through the CNY period. The ongoing Snoopy Winter Holidays event celebrates the 75th anniversary of the famous Peanuts comic strip. Here, you can munch on series-themed delicacies, take photographs with Snoopy and his friends, and explore a souvenir store offering limited-edition collectibles. Next is the Macau Art City · NAKED OCEAN Exhibition, a collaboration with Japan’s NAKED, INC., offering an interactive journey through a digital underwater world. Using projections and immersive installations, the exhibition highlights marine life while integrating elements of Macau’s cultural heritage, including city landmarks like the Grand Lisboa Macau.

Where to Eat

As you would expect from a brand like Grand Lisboa Palace, the food options are plenty. One of the absolute must-visits is Palace Garden, winner of a Forbes Five-Star Award and One-Diamond in the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide. Here, you can delve into a long list Cantonese favorites, like partridge bisque and crystal king tiger prawns, all served in a setting inspired by imperial gardens. For your daily workhorse eating, The Grand Buffet has an array of international and regional dishes, including live-cooking stations and seasonal specialties. All of this gets punctuated with an extensive wine selection and scenic views of the resort’s gardens.

Where to Chill

While you are there, make sure you check out Jardim Secreto, a European-inspired garden set amidst the resort’s architecture. With manicured greens, gazebos, and baroque-style landscaping, the space feels ripped right from the pages of an 18th century period movie. Walk the pathways and fill your IG with all manner of snaps against the green backdrops or capture some of the live performances happening around the area.

There is also a lot more going on this Chinese New Year. Check out all the details about the hotel below. Booking and promotion periods vary, with offerings available until February or March 2025.
