22 events you don't want to miss in Bangkok this July
Bangkok Book Festival, an awesome excuse to revisit Museum Siam and a ton of concerts. Here's what's coming up in July.
The Chiang Mai-based singer/songwriter, winner of three awards at the Kom Chad Luek Music Awards in March and known for her signature sound fusing elements of traditional Thai molam with jazz, soul and blues, performs live.

Photographer Taweewit Kijtanasoonthonr’s latest solo exhibition takes a peek inside the neon-lit windows of Bangkok’s late-night karaoke bars. The series goes beyond the garish façades of these institutions and delves into the loneliness of the people living within.

If you’re a budding zine maker, creative writer or just an old-fashioned bookworm, this event consists of a zine-making workshop, an exhibition of noteworthy independent zines with 18+ content, and a free-for-all zine library for kicking back and reading, a zine swap zone for makers to exchange works, a zine shop for readers to get their hands on freshly printed zines, and, finally, a refreshments area filled with food and drinks.
Jul 2. Museum Siam, 4 Sanam Chai Rd.
A total of 500 trendy clothes stalls return to take over Royal Paragon Hall for the seventh edition of this massive shopping destination. Along with the regular brands, this edition focuses on a rainy season theme, promising season-appropriate clothes as well as a brand new food zone bringing food and drink stalls for the first time in a Zaap event.

This year, indie concert promoters Have You Heard? have already brought us special visitors in the form of Ratatat and Last Dinosaurs. Now they’re turning to a familiar name: Swedish dream-pop band The Radio Dept. were last here in 2013, when they performed tracks like “Heaven’s on Fire” and “Pulling Our Weight” to a jam-packed Sonic Ekamai. This time they’ll be taking over the stage with teaser songs from their forthcoming album, along with support from local acts Hariguem Zaboy and Yena.
Jul 4. Voice Space, BBD Building, Viphavadi Rangsit Rd.
This film festival dedicates itself to promoting Thailand as a popular destination for shooting films, with the event screening popular movies that have been shot in Thailand, ranging from Hollywood blockbusters to independent works. There will also be an announcement for the winners of the Amazing Thailand Film Challenge which funded budding filmmakers to make short films in Thailand throughout the past year.
Jul 6-12. Paragon Cineplex, Siam Paragon. BTS Siam
After taking their 21st century take on Isaan funk on tour throughout Europe, including a date at Glastonbury, the band have lived to tell the tale and now they’ll be performing a special set at their spiritual home, Studio Lam.

The French DJ and producer brings his signature nu disco sound to the Bangkok stage including tracks like "So Electric" and "Discopolis", with support from local talent Supersonic.
Jul 6. Beam, 72 Courtyard, 72 Sukhumvit Soi 55
For their regular documentary club, the craft beer institution screens a documentary following the lives of four Australian kids whose parents are all gay, as society comes to terms with issues of marriage equality. Tickets are B120 and include a free bottle of Ayinger beer.
Jul 7. I Hate Pigeons, 34/2 Sathorn Soi 1 (Sribumphen)
Entrepreneur Now Asia presents a day of keynote speeches and discussions about thriving business strategies from some of the country's leading businesses as well as international names including AIS, Google, Standard Chartered Bank, Wear You Want and many more.
Jul 8. Windsor Hotel, Sukhumvit 20.
The Japanese indie pop group perform tracks from their latest album, Through the Deep, with support from local indie bands Fwends and Telex Telexs.
Jul 9. Live RCA Bangkok, RCA, Rama 9 Rd.
The local party organizers celebrate their second anniversary with a party featuring what they do best: old school hip-hop, funk, '80s and reggae tunes from DJs Luck-E, Karl Andy, Arin and Rory Breaker-Morant. There will also be an after-party in the Grind Room with music from DJs Sir Walt and Slomororo.

American photographer Christopher Wise, owner of WTF, presents an exhibition documenting Bangkok's architectural fabric, from decying '70s buildings to air-conditioned skyscrapers reminiscent of Singapore and Dubai's buildings.
Jul 9-Aug 14. WTF Gallery & Cafe, 7 Sukhumvit Soi 51
The Bangkok illustrator hosts his first exhibition featuring his illustrations, paintings and comics from his "Kid Within" series that captures fun, nostalgic moments everyone would have experienced in their childhood. The opening exhibition features live music from emerging rock band Marathon, as well as a live illustration drawing session.
Jul 9-Sep 16. Pullman Bangkok Hotel G, 188 Silom Rd.
The film festival focusing on extremely short films (30 seconds long) hold its awards night where all the submitted films will be screened followed by an award presentation where the winner of the audience vote will receive at B10,000 prize. Other categories include "Best Documentary," "Best Science Fiction," "Best Director," as well as more tongue-in-cheek awards such as "Most likely to be booed at Cannes" and "Most Tarentino-esque."

The book-focused event returns with seminars and talks from Bangkok-based university lecturers who'll be discussing literature and media-related topics such as the media industry in Thailand, the rise of Bangkok's independent bookstores, book licensing and copyrights, emerging Thai literature writers and much more. Of course, there also promises a large book sale featuring both Thai and international novels and non-fiction works for bookworms to enjoy.
Jul 15-17. Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (BACC), 939 Rama 1 Rd.
A film screening series in which five acclaimed female Thai directors are invited to select international films to be screened bi-monthly from May-Nov. This month sees the screening of the 2013 drama/adventure film Nebraska directed by Alexander Payne and chosen by Wanwaew and Waewwan Hongvivatana, twin scripwriters known for their series “Wish us Luck”. There will be a discussion about the film after the screening.
Jul 23. Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), 939 Rama 1 Rd.
Seven of the country's most popular rock bands, including Bodyslam, Big Ass, Potato, 25 Hours, Cocktail, Lomosonic and The Yers, take the stage in this festival celebrating the best of Thai rock music.

One month after the results of the United Kingdom's referendum vote to leave the EU, a panel of academics will gather to discuss the implications that the decision has on the UK, Europe and Asia. The panelists include Dr. Peter Shearman (Institute of Security and International Studies, Chulalongkorn University), Dr. David Moore (Portland State University), Dr. Kenneth Houston (Webster University) and Dr. James Gomez (Bangkok University).

The magazine's mid year fair returns with home decor booths, electronics, household and garden decor and crafts. Highlight zones this year include: Eco Village (Thai designs), Craft Village (workshops), Room Life Studio (by Room and Health & Cuisine), Green House (plants and gardening tools) and Color Party (home decor). There will also be a food truck zone on-site.

Democrazy Theatre Studio presents a performance following five drama students at a theater workshop who are told to imagine themselves in a green field with a friendly cow, leading them on an adventure that blurs the line between imagination and reality.

The ex-Disney star turned pop singer, aka Justin Bieber's ex-girlfriend, makes her way to the Bangkok stage for the first time this summer. Fans can expect performances of her brand new hits from her latest album Revival, such as "Good for You" and "Same Old Love" as well as many of her other guilty-pleasure songs from previous albums.
