The Glass by Art Box
Regular Rodfai Markets and Chatuchak aside, this is probably the most visited outdoor market in the city. After taking a quick break, Bangkok’s biggest container market finally promises to return this month at The EmDistrict, continuing every Friday through Sunday all the way
through Jun 19. Expect the same colorful syrupy drinks and snacky items. The fashion and cutesy accessories maybe less high-end than most other pop-ups in the city, but you'll still find some unique handmade items, like the pretty LED wires by
Enlight BKK—if you can handle the crowd of teenagers taking selfies.
Every weekend through Jun 19, starting Mar 18-19. Near Benjasiri Park, Sukhumvit Rd. BTS Phrom Phong, Exit 6. www.fb.com/artboxthailand
Stripped Art Street
For something less overwhelming, stop by this student-run market in the Siam area. Returning for the second year, the creative Chula kids are hosting an arty street fair that spans across the university’s Architecture, Fine Arts and Arts faculties, featuring exhibitions, live art, independent food stalls and handmade crafts as well as live music performances by Bangkok indie acts. Don’t be put off by the fact that it’s hosted by students—it’s open for public, and the turnout last year was pretty impressive.
The Great Outdoor Pop Up Experiment
The team that turned Bangkok Docklands into hipster haven is experimenting in a new location. Staying in line with the crew’s love for abandoned spaces, the next market is set to take place at Tha Din Daeng East Pier, featuring a river bar and terrace and an outdoor theater screening experimental films. The six-meter-tall “Rustic Warehouse” made of bamboo and iron steel will see food courtesy of The Kitchen Mess, Guss Damn Good, Blue Dye Cafe and more. They’re also promising live music performances on the “Experimental” stage, featuring Gym & Swim (Mar 26), Inspirative Band (Mar 27), X0809 (Apr 2) and Marathon (Apr 3). They’re introducing a “Neon Club” with live DJs when the clock strikes midnight—but we’ll probablu just bring a few friends to chill under the stars.
Jam Head in Wonderland
After hosting the Dream Castle Fest at the end of last year, the vast area that used to be Wonderland Fun Park will be taken over by Jam Head Market at the end of this month, and it looks to be another cutesy outdoor gathering that takes advantage of the iconic castle. Expect live performances by more mainstream acts this time, though: Lipta, Lula, Jetset'er, Atom and many more. As usual, you won’t go hungry, and you might even be able to bring home some DIY arty products (we managed to snag a few postcards last time). A HOBS’ pop-up bar, and plenty of parking space are also plusses.
Urban Eatery
For foodie fairs, K-Village continues to be one of the most reliable venues in town. This final week of March, Urban Eatery returns with an Easter-themed market, featuring their regular vendors (more heavily geared towards food). Expect to see some cute pastel finds, plus some simple workshops and live music in the evening. Not a bad idea to stop by if you’re in the area.
Mar 25-27 (Fri 4pm-9pm, Sat-Sun 10am-9pm). K-Village, Sukhumvit Soi 26
Night Bike Market
Our favorite riverside community mall plays host to the third edition of the Night Bike Market, which features organized nighttime cycling trips around the Old Town (Phra Nakhon Wonder Trip on Mar 26 and Zog Zag trip No. 2 on Mar 27), on top of a small selection of vendors. Even if you’re not a cycling enthusiast, you can still use this opportunity to return to this awesome part of town, which has been blessed with some interesting recent openings lately.
Mar 26-27. Tha Maharaj 11/1, Maharaj Rd.
Gateway Market Ep. 2 Summer Aloha
If you’ve been to Gateway Ekkamai, you will have noticed fashion markets from time to time right on the outdoor space that connects this Japanese community mall to BTS Ekkamai. Here’s one by Chic Market Event, organized especially for those who want to stroll around after work. They’re also promising a free space for workshops, plus some decent fashion finds that are surprisingly not that expensive.
Mar 28-29. Gateway Ekkamai, Sukhumvit Rd. BTS Ekkamai
Zaap On Sale #6: Aloha Summer
So a shopping trip at Zaap on Sale is never that cheap (especially at the stalls in the VIP zone in the outer hall), but the organizers always manage to bring in pretty much all the online fashion shops that we know and love (which add up to around 400 in total), as well as a very fashionable crowd (they even have a lookbook of their customers). You’re not gonna go there for the food (but you don’t really need to). The fact that the space is massive means that it will be a much more comfortable shopping sesh, especially now that the summer heat has arrived.
Apr 2-3. Royal Paragon Hall, 5/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd. BTS Siam
Japan Summer Food Festival
For the fans of Japan who haven’t quite managed to get a cheap flight to see the cherry blossoms blooming this month, Maeban (American Food Fun & Family/Homemade Handmade @ K-Village) is at least bringing the food to you. This market promises a selection of all the Japanese street food you can think of. They’re also promising an “Open Kitchen” by some well-known restaurants, with games and prizes to be won.
Apr 2-3 (1pm-10pm). CentralWorld Square B, Ratchaprasong Rd. BTS Chidlom
