The Singapore Writers Festival is back with plenty of new twists
This year, they've got concerts, film screenings and crazy plays, along with the usual cerebral discussions. Oh, and tickets go on sale this weekend.
Themed "Island of Dreams" this year's Singapore Writers Festival will take place Oct 30-Nov 8 and feature a whopping 89 international writers and 300 events.
Although there aren't as many American celebrities as there had been last year, this year's line-up includes Booker prize nominee Deborah Levy and Sophie Hannah, whose who was commissioned to write Agatha Christie's new Hercule Poirot novel, The Monogram Murders.
On the local front, we're interested to see quirky cartoonist Miel, controversial graphic novelist Sonny Liew, food blogger Adam Shah and playwright Eleanor Wong, known for her play, The Campaign to Confer the Public Service Star on JBJ.
Author Adrian Tan, of the local cult classic, The Teenage Textbook, will also be there. This year, the National Gallery's courtyard is also one of the venues, hosting Joseph Wong, the son of Alphonso Wong, as he talks about his father's legacy in creating the beloved comic, Old Master Q, as well as his own body of work.
If you dislike reading, there are tons of plays, movie screenings and concerts going on this year, too. Join local bands In Each Hand A Cutlass and I Am David Sparkle in a double-bill showcase on Oct 30, for example. There's even a 12-hour theatrical performance at The Arts House over Nov 6-7, called What I Love About You is Your Attitude Problem. Local bands will perform on the lawn of The Arts House, too.
