For many in Bangkok, this will be their first chance to experience Kwaito, a distinctly South African-born genre of music that enjoys a cult following worldwide.

Beamcube has quickly become one of Bangkok’s best spots to discover niche music trends both new and old—just a few months ago we wrote about their Japanese city pop event

Now, one of South Africa’s legendary Kwaito pioneers is taking over the Sathorn venue on Friday Sep 27 from 9pm to late. The music genre, which has its roots in Johannesburg, feels like a blend of house and hip-hop beats with distinctly South African rhythms and samples. Another thing that makes the genre unique is its performative element, which sees artists singing, ad-libbing, and dancing on stage—you can get a sense of the vibes we’re talking about on Sandy B's Instagram page

This year marks the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Amajovi Jovi, which despite being released independently without label support spread through South African music circles and earned him a significant cult following, first at home and then abroad, as DJs discovered the records. He is considered among just a handful of artists to popularize the sound worldwide.

The event at Beamcube will be the first time the venue has hosted a live singing performance (paired with a DJ backtrack), and is geared towards a night of dancing and exploring a new type of fun music.

Opening for Sandy B on the night will be RomRom—who share a cult following in Bangkok’s music scene in their own right and have played Kwaito at venues like Studio Lam and 12x12—and Beamcube’s resident DJ and music curator Brent Burns.
