We’ve been hearing quite a bit about sour beers of late. The New York Times ran an extensive tasting piece on them and the International Beer Shop in Perth has already added some to their shelves.

So what is sour beer? It is a style, most often from Belgium, produced through spontaeneous fermentation with wild yeast strains. The result is a tart brew vastly different from anything mainstream.

For a taste of authentic sour beer, go for Rodenbach ($12) or Rodenbach Grand Cru ($18) at Brussels Sprouts. If you’d prefer to start with something fruitier, you can try the Timmerman’s Floris and Lindemans lambic ranges (strawberry, cherry, raspberry, peach, apple, cassis, chocolate and more) from $12.
