This popular spirit will soon be available in plastic-free, paper-based bottles
Jumping on the eco-friendly bandwagon.
Diageo, the maker of Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness, has announced that it has crafted the world’s first ever 100 percent plastic-free, paper-based spirits bottle, made from sustainably sourced wood. Expect to see the bottles cladded with Johnnie Walker labels as soon as early 2021.
The idea came to fruition after Diageo forged a new partnership with venture management company Pilot Lite; the pair then launched Pulpex Limited, a new world-leading sustainable packaging technology company. Pulpex has developed a "first-of-its-kind" paper-based bottle designed and developed to be 100 percent plastic-free and fully recyclable. Made from sustainably sourced pulp to meet food-safe standards, it will be recyclable in standard waste streams. Hopefully, the technology will urge other brands to rethink their packaging designs, and encourage the use of more eco-friendly materials in existing designs.
The packaging has been designed to contain a variety of liquid products in order to fulfill one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: "Responsible Consumption and Production."
