Summer Dress is not a new name on the Thai underground music scene. Signed to Panda Records, the five-piece released their debut album in 2012.
Their second album, called Serious Music, will be released with an official launch party at Pridi Pranomyong Institure on Mar 22. As you may have gathered from the album title, this is being called a more "sophisticated and atmospheric" effiort than the previous release.
But don't let the threat of maturity scare you off. The first track off the new album is "1917" (listen below) and it's one of the best Thai indie-pop singles of the year so far. The track name is a reference to the year De Stijl, the Dutch artistic movement known for its strict adherence to pure geometric forms and primary colors, was formed.
While the last album was all pleasant jangly pop with simple lyrics repeated over and over, the new track hints at a lot more musical complexity. The lyrical repetitiveness is still there (the only audible lyrics chant the title over and over), but we love how the song slowly builds and builds to a stirring finale. We imagine it would go down very well live.
