Giving Shanghai from the 1920s, last night, the stars were out for the opening of Goldsmith, the long awaited upstairs bar from Chop Chop Cook Shop.
Found in the five-floor Goldsmith building that was built by a—you guessed it—goldsmith, Chop Chop Cook Shop came on the scene in 2023 with plenty of buzz, featuring the cookshop cuisine from the inimitable David Thompson. We’ve been waiting for this spot to feature a bar ever since.
Inside this new Chinatown hang on the second floor, you’ll find turn-of-the-century Chinese touches to the design, bright blues and, of course, auspicious red throughout. It’s fitted with the fixtures of the one and only Jim Thompson’s fabrics.
And it’s not just the interior, the cocktail menu here takes its cues from Shanghai, with big helpings of floral notes and spirit-forward drinks. They’re featuring 13 signature cocktails starting at B350, and a few classic options for the less adventurous.
Nabiel Nasaran is mixing behind the bar. At the top of the menu is the building and the bar’s namesake, Goldsmith at B450 mixes herbal and umami notes by pairing the likes of shochu of shiitake syrup and blueberry and lemon.
Kirby's Funhouse leans hard into the flowery flavors mixing gin and cynar with mango-hibiscus and grenadine. Visitors will also notice some on point ice cubes with gold flakes courtesy of Bangkok Ice Studio, which you might have noticed making some of the cool ice sculptures around town.
With bar bites from David Thompson himself, the kick off for this spot included a few songs from Bangkok's resident burlesque and performance maven, Madame Rouge, and this will be a spot to watch for cocktail lovers in Chinatown.
