It's tough to run a nightclub in Shanghai, let alone a gay one. After a packed-out opening party in the middle of June, Club Angel, a massive gay club run by Pinkhome, has closed temporarily for 'inner adjustments'. According to the offical announcement on its weibo, Club Angel 'has been the focus of attention since its soft opening', and the authorities have received over 40 offence reporting letters which 'attack and demonize the gay community'.

The announcement goes on: 'we reckon we can't guarantee the safety of the entertainment of the gay community in a situation like this, so we have decided to close temporarily on July 28 so we can intercoordinate between different sides.' Club Angel also stated in another announcement earlier that they had enough reasons to believe these reporting letters were sent by its competitors i.e. other gay clubs in town.

It's a shame, and it's not only the gay community that are feeling the growing pain. Good luck to Club Angel, which will hopefully re-open for business in a few weeks.
