Launching two weeks ago, Canto Disco is filling a Cantonese food and nightlife niche in Asoke with a venue combining bites from Hong Kong with a lively vibe—casual dining with a party atmosphere.
Found in the P23 Building on Sukhumvit Soi 23, this new spot comes from the minds behind Yumcha and Alexandre Huguet from Hong Kong’s dining and nightlife scene. In the kitchen is Chef Ping Lu Zhi doling out Chinese faves with a twist.
If you just want to peck at some dimsum to put on a base for the booze, this spot has a menu of small bites with classics like pork and shrimp sui mai (B168) and shrimp har gao (B168), but they’re also boasting some more fusion-y bites like tomyum siu long bao (B168) or the wasabi prawns with sichuan spices (B258).
For something a little heartier, Canto Disco has a rice and noodles menu with favorites like glass noodles with crab and shrimp-fried rice with XO sauce, but the big ticket item is their instagram-friendly Claw-Some Noodles (B2,588), e-fu noodles with lobster.
On the liquor front, Canton Disco boasts a curated sake collection with bottles starting at B2,500, and cocktail lovers will find traditional cocktails given the Hong Kong treatment. All of the signature cocktails get a little kick from Cantonese style, as in the Canton Sour (B348), which takes the classic whiskey sour and infuses the bourbon with oolong tea.
For you Canadians out there, you can add this place to the short list of venues offering caesars—can’t see a caesar and not want a caesar—with the Canton Caesar (B428) fueled by tequila and boosted with clam juice, clamato, jalapeno, and hot sauce.
But don’t get lost in the signature cocktails because the highball menu features seven simple (and more affordable) drinks, including lychee to yakult flavored highballs, made with shochu and sake.
It’s a large space, able to seat 78 people, with latticed Hong Kong-style design in atmospheric red and high windows that look out onto Asoke. Serving until midnight, it’ll be a great space to fill up before the clubbing starts.
P23 Building, 11/2 Sukhumvit Soi 23, 098-088-8952. Open daily 5pm-midnight.
