Thonglor staple 72 Courtyard has undergone some big changes this year (catch the highlights of
those here). The legendary BEAM nightclub had a rework, including the transformation of the former “Beam Lounge” into an entirely new venue:
katsu.
The new space very much follows the core BEAM design language, including the stellar lighting system inspired by the work of American artist James Turrell — check out
his art and you will see the similarities — and the VOID Acoustics sound system pulled from the previous BEAM.
That system is getting some good use so far. The club leans towards easy-listening house, R&B, and hip-hop for most of its gigs. Bangkok's Suburb Sound crew took over for a night in February and packed the house with their fusion of electronic, hip-hop, and experimental Thai-inspired sounds. The venue was also selected to be part of a global takeover party for Shygirl's new album “
Club Shy Room 2.”
Low-level seating enclaves line about half the club’s walkable space, leaving plenty of room to both dance or chill out with a crew at a table. Table packages start at B15,000 for five people and include two spirits, mixers, and shot trays. The wider cocktail menu, which is beamed (sorry) on the wall behind the bar and DJ booth, its concise but hits most of the flavor notes a young crowd of partygoers would want like the bubbly Honeydew Fizz (vodka, melon, soda, B300) or the rum-forward Ruby Ruby (rum, watermelon, amaro, citrus, B300).
One of the signatures here, and probably what you will see on Instagram, is their in-house boozy slushies whipped up in a machine swirling away behind the bar. The drinks (B300) all come in vibrant colors like bright purple and orange, usually reflecting their core flavors — definitely worth a slurp.
