Hers was the biggest concert to hit Thailand since Michael Jackson visited way back in 1993, so we’d like to believe Lady Gaga wasn’t faking the waterworks when she went on and on mid-song about Bangkokians’ accepting and accommodating nature. The reported 50,000 in attendance certainly lapped up the theatrics, but then you’d be hard pressed to find an artist who so strongly captures the zeitgeist of the city. If what it takes is larger-than-life performers who exhibit gender-blurring behavior to truly grab the attention of the music-loving public (and tour promoters), then it makes what we’re hearing—that the next mega event in town could be more crocodile rock than crocodile tears—all the more believable.
