There are more than 949 Rohingya illegal migrants detained in Thailand in heavily overcrowded police facilities. (They’ve been fleeing Myanmar because of violent ethnic clashes there, with their government mostly supporting Buddhists over the Muslims.) The Central Islamic Council of Thailand has been begging Thai authorities to release them from detention and set them up in refugee camps. The council has even offered the Songkhla mosque, in Narathiwat, be used as a shelter for Rohingya migrants who have not been charged with criminal offences. While Foreign Minister Surapong Tovikchaikul has promised to come up with a solution, we’re still putting our money on the Islamic Council doing the most to assist these refugees. To support their efforts, you can donate to the Rohingya Assistance Fund; account number 934-1-48557-6, at the Islamic Bank of Thailand, Hat Yai Branch.
