Fresh from starring in the Thai remake of the internationally famous Korean series Full House, singer-actor Pirath “Mike” Nitipaisalkul, 24, is gearing up to release his first album in four years, under the name Mike D. Angelo. He opens up to BK about following in the foot-steps of Korean superstar Rain, his disillusionment with the entertainment industry and the accusations he’s had plastic surgery.
I had no dream. I started working in the entertainment industry when I was just 11. I was just a boy who loved to work for the fun of it after being recruited by GMM to sing J-pop with my brother, Golf [Pichaya Nitipaisalkul], in the G-Junior program. We debuted in 2006.

It wasn’t the life I wanted. I only realized later. I had no personal life. I couldn’t go out with friends. I had to go to work after school. I had no social life like other kids.

Child singers must update their image as their fans grow up. Otherwise, we’d disappear from view.

Separating from Golf in 2010 was my turning point. I struggled to handle everything without my brother. I wanted to take a break and thought about going to study abroad. I tried to regain what I had missed friends and a social life.

Working alone helps you see the clearer picture. I used to thrust all responsibilities on my brother, but when I did it all by myself, I slowly realized that I actually loved my job. I still wanted to work in the industry, just differently. I wanted to be a creator, too.

Acting put me back on the radar. I was considering quitting the industry when I got a role in the lakorn [TV series] Rak Boon [2012], which was quite a success. I later got the chance to be in the Thai version of Full House, the super-popular Korean series. My role was originally played by Rain [Korean pop superstar].

Comparisons are inevitable. It was a lot of pressure taking on a role that had been so hugely successful before. I was genuinely surprised that fans, both in Thailand and internationally, loved my version too.

The entertainment industry reflects that this world is an illusion. You only see what they want us to see, but you will never know what’s behind it. Everyone wears a mask.

Don’t gossip while I’m around. I tell everyone this. If you gossip about someone to me, chances are you will talk behind my back too.

I’ve never left music behind. It’s always been something I want to keep doing. Now I’m back recording under a new name, Mike D. Angelo, which is the name of my family’s leather business. I do all the songs on my own, with some help from others.

Management is a headache. I want to focus on the artistic side, but it’s impossible. I tried to produce my first MV [“Oh Baby I”] but in the end it went way over budget, from B400,000 to B700,000.

Things can only get better after you make a mistake. If you learn a hard lesson, then the next thing will  be easy.

Singing on stage is challenging. You must practice over and over for one shot, unlike acting in films or lakorn, where you can redo many takes. I make some mistakes but no one really catches on. I always give the microphone to my fans when I forget the lyrics.

Clubbing is boring. I don’t smoke or drink, so going out to dance isn’t so appealing. I always sneak out before everyone else. I prefer going to natural destinations like beaches or mountains.

I haven’t had plastic surgery. Many people believe that I have, but honestly I just had filler injections in my nose. That’s it.

Imperfect is perfect. Plastic surgery devalues a person’s charm. Now everyone is looking the same. Remember that you will be loved because of what you have inside, not your looks.

Don’t judge people if you don’t know them. What you have seen or heard might not be the truth. They might be a scapegoat. I’ve been embroiled in a lot of scandals in the tabloids, so I understand that you shouldn’t believe all the headlines. They’re just a way of selling news.

Our society moves so fast we can’t screen anything from our children anymore. Violence and sex are everywhere in the media. It seems people are so used to it and are OK with it.

Dreams are where inspiration begins. If you have a goal, your inspiration will come.

I dream to perform in front of hundreds of thousands of people. Standing in the middle of that crowd would be incredible.

Creating great things for the next generation is more important than amassing a fortune. It would be an honor if I could create something for people before I die.

You must be rich by helping people, not stepping on them.

Live your life with no regrets. I hope I can say I have no regrets when my life comes to an end.
