Bangkok is getting another huge food festival at the end of this month
You’ll also be able to watch Thai soap stars bumble the art of cooking for the glory of your Instagram feed
Barely two months into the year and we've already been spoiled with food events and festivals. Now, one of the biggest food festivals from 2017, Singha Food Fest, is back for another round of blaring Thai pop and row upon row of food stalls—setting up shop at the event grounds right next to Makkasan Station from Mar 23-25.
The last event at Lhong 1919 featured some of the best names in Thai street food, and the latest edition picks up were that left off. There’s 50 food venues spread across three zones: Food Debut (first-time vendors), Food Idol (well-known vendors) and Food Legend (you get it).
The categories are kind of misnomers, though. Looking over the Food Debut lineup reveals some pretty well known names, like Kiaw Kai Ka, which specializes in hard-to-find Thai dishes like ma haaw (pineapple served with sweet and savory peanut sauce). Highlights on the Food Idol side include one of Bangkok’s best khao man gai (Singapore’s Hainanese-style chicken and rice) specialists, Kainaihin. The Food Legend’s include Tong Peng, which dishes out addictive crispy-skin roasted duck and tender mun tow (steamed Chinese buns) and salted roast ginkgo nuts—a classic Chinese bar snack. If you are particularly savvy, you’ll recognize most of those names are staples in Ladprao.
If running your way through 50-odd food vendors isn’t enough, there’s also a gang of Thai celebrities trying their hand at the food trade—and it’s your chance to be their culinary guinea pigs. The celeb list includes Thai soap star Ken Phupoom, who’s helping Kiaw Kai Ka serve up it’s famous ma haw, and actor Amp Pheerawas, who will slap together fresh bowls of noodle soup at the Shizen food stall. Hordes of fans will likely be in tow, so don't expect to get too much food from either Amp or Ken—we expect they’ll make a brilliant rookie-cook mess as well.
As you might expect, the festival grounds are designed to be an Instagram gold mine; a massive installation made of old kitchenware; light displays; and tons of live music—including names like Stamp Apiwat, The Parkinson, Tattoo Colour and Palmy.
Singha Food Fest on Mar 23-25, at Airport Link Makkasan, New Petchaburi rd.
