It might have taken years, and plenty of political wrangles, to complete the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center but it seems that the powers that be have now got a taste for modern art. Hot on the heels of the opening of the privately-owned Museum of Contemprary Art in Chatuchak the cabinet just signed off on a budget of more than B1 billion to build another contemporary art center in Bangkok. The plan is to take an old building in the heart of the historic Rajadamnoen Avenue and use it as an art space and learning center to promote Thai art and culture. Most of the money will be spent on renovating and renting the building—not, unfortunately, on buying a proper collection. Still, the culture minister did say the center, which should be complete in around a year, would house some works by National Artists. So, at least there might be something to look at.
