As if April couldn’t get any sweatier, the Mass Rapid Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has announced that as of the first of the month descending escalators will be turned off at MRT stations during off-peak hours (9am to 4pm) to cut back on electricity use. As part of the Bangkok Metro Plc’s (BMCL) “We All Can Do” campaign, which runs through June 30, passengers at these times will be expected to use the stairs instead, all in the name of cutting costs and saving power. It’s not all bad news though; think of the health benefits—the campaign name does resemble a certain sport brand’s slogan, after all. And, hey, it’s not like their switching off the air-con or, much worse, all those TVs on every platform and in every carriage, so there’s plenty to take your mind off the ripening stench and sticky touch of your fellow exhausted commuter.
