[Sponsored] Close enough but blissfully away from the madness of Orchard Road is leafy and relaxing Tanglin. If you’re into nature walks, picnics and bike rides, but don’t want to stray far from your Sunday boozy brunch, Tanglin is the hood for your next relaxed weekend. Here’s how to do it.
There are plenty of opportunities for both relaxation and raucous fun in the area, so it's worth camping locally for the weekend. Formerly the old Traders Hotel, the four-star Hotel Jen Tanglin has gotten a huge revamp and a jazzed up contemporary look, with free and fast WiFi, funky grafitti on the walls and other glam touches. They're doing a Valentine's Staycation Package, too, with perks like cocktail hour, early check-in, late check-out and more. Rooms start at $300. The Feb 13 staycations are sold out, but you can still sign up for one on the night of Feb 14. And if you have a posse in tow, sign up for the party staycation package ($700), which includes your own private Executive Suite for up to four people (four additional people can stay and party until bedtime), a vodka watermelon, free use of a GoPro camera, a SMEG fridge full of mixers and lots of other goodies.
The winding, hilly, leafy road of Tanglin cry out for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. If you're staying at Hotel Jen, you can borrow (yes, borrow, not rent) a bicycle. And not just any bicycle. The hotel works with hipster-chic Tokyo Bikes to provide up to four beauties to guests. Ride yours around Nassim Hill, the perimeter of the Royal Tanglin Golf Course, the Botanic Gardens and all over.
Ride up to Dempsey Hill for the afternoon, where along with restaurants, cafes, art galleries and lots else, there's the newly reopened lifestyle hub Loewen by Dempsey Hill. Shop, browse art, take a yoga class, or take one of their self-guided walking tours. There are three itineraries to choose from: the Nature & Heritage Trail, the Epicurean Trail and the City Dweller's Trail.
There are plenty of good options for good coffee on Dempsey Hill, including the likes of PS Cafe and Jones the Grocer. But if you head back to Hotel Jen, you can ooh and aah over the shockingly good coffee at Jen's Kitchen On the Go, a cute little lobby cafe that serves take-away snacks and, more importantly, artisanally roasted beans courtesy of Nomad the Gallant. If you're not into post-noon caffeination, they do pressed juices, power smoothies and plenty else.
Of course, no weekend in Tanglin is complete without some quality time spent at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which last year became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alas, you can't ride your bike in there, but you can picnic. There are usually free afternoon guided tours through the various zones, and if you go around Valentine's Day (Feb 13-14), there will be live music over two nights at the Bandstand.
Sundays are for boozy brunching, and Hotel Jen Tanglin has a great new, value-for-money option at the airy and bright J65. For $88 per person, you get all the essentials: sushi, a super meaty live carving station, a laksa station dishing out seven regional varieties, a buffet of local delights and international classics, desserts and more. You also get serenaded by local talent carefully chosen by the in-house team. Add another $40 and you also get free-flow Champagne, wines and beer. And don't forget to check out the brand new, Singapore-themed mural, a product of #NextJenArt made by Hong Kong-based street art collective The Parents Parents, who have been toiling for two weeks at both J65 and the poolside with ther unique brand of graffiti, typography and funny characters.
