Here’s what you can buy in Bangkok with a single Bitcoin
One Bitcoin is valued around 235,000 baht. Here’s some ridiculous things you can buy in Bangkok for that amount.
The dust has finally settled on last year’s Bitcoin bubble that saw the world’s first cryptocurrency reach an unprecedented value of around B596,607 (USD17,900). The bubble burst early this year, but not as bad as people might think. A single Bitcoin is still worth about B235,000 according to Thai Bitcoin trading site bx.in.th, more than six times what it was in Jan 2017.
It’s becoming more and more difficult for people to ignore the influence of blockchain tech (what makes bitcoin work) and cyrptocurrencies in Bangkok. According to the website coinmap.com, there are 108 brick-and-mortar stores (including perennial Top Tables inductee Eat Me) that will accept Bitcoin straight from your account. Other than that, you’ll have to withdraw the Bitcoin as real cash to use it.
This month, Hybrid Summit 2018—one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency events—is coming to Bangkok. The event will feature talks from some of Asia’s leading minds on the topic and is aimed at educating people interested in cryptocurrency about how it can be used (BK readers get a discounted price by using the code: BKWEB). More details on that below.
We, on the other hand, are here to educate you on all of the shamefully excessive things you can buy with a single bitcoin in Bangkok.
Every billionaire has at least a few of these tucked into their multi-story garage. Prestige Car Rental Bangkok (F/29, The Offices at Centralworld, 02-207-2303) will let you snuggle into a Lamborghini LP 560 or Ferrari 360 for around B50,000 per day. If you want to tone it down a bit, grab a Porsche Cayman for B13,000 per day and live the dream for more than two whole weeks.
By far the cheapest thing on this list. A single Bitcoin could buy one dinner for two people at every Michelin-star restaurant in Bangkok. At around B155,691 for food alone, though, you probably wouldn’t have enough for wine pairings with every course, but definitely a couple glasses per restaurant. Another option: eat alone at Gaggan every day for 30 days straight.
Despite massive delays to the other parts, the Ritz-Carlton Residences portion of MahaNakhon has been done for some time. According to the website Thailand Property, the median price per square meter is B401,000, so your single bitcoin would get you a little more than half of that. That’s about enough to afford a closet-sized chunk—but what a nice closet it would be!
Remember Mr. Fat? Everyone’s favorite moo ping vendor left his post on the corner of Convent Rd. long ago to expand his street food empire across the city. The easiest way to get your hands on some juicy moo ping (B12/stick) and Mr. Fat’s legendary nam jim jaew dipping sauce (B50/bottle) is on FoodPanda. And, yeah, you can buy a lot with a Bitcoin.
Branches of this international fitness mega-chain are popping up all over Thailand at this point, and we can’t blame the masses for herding towards its state-of-the-art facilities and sleek metallic finishes. It doesn’t come cheap, though. Even the mighty Bitcoin will only earn you 5 years’ worth of the Active Me (full-access) membership.
The Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter is set to light the Impact Arena on fire this Oct 28. Last year, Smith's single “Too Good at Goodbyes” debuted at number one in the UK and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100. VIP tickets run a cool B9,000. If you have a full Bitcoin you could bring 25 of your friends along for the hi-so ride.
Hybrid Summit 2018 is a unique, expertly-curated forum for educating thousands of people on the potential of blockchain technology. The event brings together members of the cryptocurrency community and recognized speakers from all over the world to share, and discuss their ideas. The overall goal? Drive broad adoption of cryptocurrencies and support the Thailand community in accessing international-level tools and programs to do so.
This year’s event takes place at the Centara Grand Convention Center from July 28-29.
