It's hard to overstate how incredible Uber is. It connects you to freelance drivers at the tap of a button on your smartphone. The service is so well designed that it consistently delivers cleaner, more courteous, more reliable and cheaper cars and drivers in the 31 countries where it has already been rolled out. Quietly, almost secretly, the service has already landed in Bangkok.

In a blog post dated February 27th, Uber announced that it is "secretly" available in Bangkok. The service allows you to find a car, usually high-end sedans, with a freelance driver. In their own words, here's how it works:

  1. Open your Uber app on your phone, request a car, and in minutes a nice ride will show up and get you on your way.
  2. No unnecessary waiting: you can see where your car is on a live map and get a notification when it’s arriving.
  3. No need for cash. All payments are processed in the app via credit card and your receipts are emailed to you instantly.
  4. Use promo code: UBERSAWASDEE and get one free ride!  (up to 300THB)

To convince us of their cred, they enlisted two A-list stars, WoodyTalk host Woody and model/actress Paula Taylor, which appeared next to very smartly dressed drivers. But it will be interesting to see how the app will be received in Bangkok. For one, EasyTaxi and GrabTaxi offer to make calling a cab that little bit less painful, with similar, "come pick me up here" functions and tracking of your ride. And then there's the question of how taxis will react to Uber. In Paris, taxis called the app unfair competition and even got violent, throwing stones at Uber cars.

We're definitely eager to try it out. In fact, we're currently testing the aforementioned taxi apps, too, and will give you a full comparison of all three services very soon.
