[Sponsored] Singapore is home to an array of international award-winning local authors. While names like Catherine Lim and Alfian Sa’at are well known, there are many other Singaporean authors whose works deserve more plaudits than they’re getting now.

The BuySingLit Festival (Feb 25-26) is the place to get acquainted with local novels, short story anthologies and poetry. It is where you will find a diverse range of voices – spanning decades – that bear witness to our lives in this thriving island city-state. This weekend is your chance to head down to the following book fairs where you can show your appreciation and support for Singaporean writers.

MPH Buy SingLit Bookfair

For the three days during the festival, MPH Bookstores will host a local lit bonanza at Raffles City Shopping Centre. Head on down for your chance to get hold of classic Singapore literary works to more recent releases.  Apart from buying books, you’ll also get the chance to sit in on meet-the-author sessions, book launches and a chance to vote for your favorite local title. The fair will also stock winning titles from the Singapore Literature Prize 2016, featuring works from the likes of Cyril Wong and Sonny Liew as well as those in Malay, Chinese and Tamil.

Hello SingLit!

If you’re in the Orchard Rd area this weekend, make sure you drop by Forum the Shopping Mall, where you’ll find pop-up bookstore and browsing corner, with storytelling sessions and other activities. Ideal for both young and old, not only will you be able to buy works by local authors, it’s also where you – and the little ones – can have loads of fun through a series of activities and workshops. Among the highlights:

On Feb 26 (2:30pm), young writers between the ages of seven and 12 can check out If I Were My Great Grandmother/Father, an hour-long workshop in which the team behind The House on Palmer Road shares how to bring the past to life in stories.

On Feb 26 (1:30pm), join Abbie Rose and her magical suitcase on a grand adventure in a reading with author Neil Humphreys. And at 3.30pm on the same day, join the authors of the popular Sherlock Sam mystery series for a half-hour storytelling session and quiz, with prizes to be won.

Buy SingLit Festival

The leafy Gillman Barracks will this weekend (Feb 25-26, 10am-7pm) host a book fair where the spotlight falls on works published by independent publishers in four of Singapore’s official languages.

Organized by independent retailer BooksActually, participating publishers include Crimson Earth, Lingzi Media and Math Paper Press; and there will also be a table for self-published titles. The book fair includes talks by key players in the local literary scene, which aim to provide an overview of the Singapore’s publishing landscape.
