Building on its Jing Jai Farmers’ Market project in Chiang Mai, retail giant Central is now opening a Jing Jai Farmers’ Market store at Central Plaza Bangna.
The flagship store will bring together the best fruit and vegetables from all over Thailand, as well as local highlights from all 77 provinces, totaling more than 290 items on the basement-level floor in front of Central Plaza Bangna’s Food Hall.
The project aims to support the grassroots economy so that families and communities can be self-reliant, have steady income, and grow produce sustainably. Central says it will help 3,000 families in 46 communities and serve as a model for plastic-free markets, as it focuses on using local and natural materials to reduce waste and encourages customers to use their own shopping bags.
When it comes to the goods, you can expect local greens like watercress from Yala, rough cocklebur from Rayong, rattan shoots from Sakon Nakhon, coconut from Koh Phangan, neck orange from Songkhla, Nakhon Phanom lychee, and lava durian from Si Saket. There will also be demonstrations from various communities, like water hyacinth weaving.
The Jing Jai Farmers’ Market launched in Chiang Mai in 2012, a coordinated social effort to introduce organic produce to more consumers and to support small farmers. Each weekend, the market typically welcomes over 5,000 visitors.
The flagship store at Central Bangna will be a model store for 10 other locations in Bangkok and vicinity by the end of this year. For more information, visit their official
