If there’s one thing that keeps Bangkokians up at night it’s surely a deep-rooted concern for those visitors and residents who choose to spend their time in the salubrious tourist hubs of Soi Cowboy, Patpong, and Nana Plaza. Thankfully, we can all rest easy now, as the police have taken steps to tighten security in these areas, as well as in backpacker haven Khao San Road, through the introduction of CCTV cameras in the roofs of various bars and pubs. Thong Lor police superintendent Pol Col Chumpol Pumpuang revealed that these cameras run on a high-tech system that even allows him to view the footage live via his mobile phone, which we’re sure must be a nice distraction when he’s stuck in traffic or dealing with some petty murder. Whether the punters visiting these spots are so happy about being filmed going about their business is another matter entirely.
