Title: “Kae Peang [Just]”
Artist: Sa-Hai-Hang-Sai-Lom
Label: Independent

Post-rock mainstays Desktop Error just dropped their second studio album, Keep Looking at the Window. Now their
guitarist Sumeth “Bird” Puang-Ok has released a solo folk project under the name Sa-Hai-Hang-Sai-Lom. If you’ve caught his appearances as a guest artist for bands like Yaan and Alone Tournament, you’ll know he’s got a knack for various string instruments. This single sees Bird use his favorite, the Isaan pin (Northeastern string instrument), to produce what reminds us of a traditional song from that region. A very peaceful, low-key release.

Title: “Wake Up Call”
Artist: New Mandarin
Label: Independent

Hot on the heels of our last month’s issue on the top bands to watch in 2014, here’s another young independent artist for lovers of indie-pop to check out. This first single by the group of three guys and one girl is a catchy melodic piece that’s likely to worm its way into your mind. With its interesting English lyrics on lovers’ morning phone calls, we only wish the vocals were a little more commanding. Still, New Mandarin is a band to keep an eye on.

Title: “1.9 Miti” [1.9 Dimension]
Artist: Two Million Thanks
Label: So::On Dry Flowers

Last year was a big one for this post-rock four-piece. They not only made their recording debut on So::On Dry Flower’s second Ghost Note Compilation but also opened for Japanese instrumental rock veterans TOE. Now the boys have come up with their first mini album, Do, which contains the new single “1.9 Miti.” The song sticks to the band’s staple sound with lots of intricate guitar playing interspersed with dreamy, atmospheric passages—and, of course, that rousing, noisy conclusion. The vocals, too, are a step up from the previous more childish offerings. A band on the up and up.

Title: “Dear Ali”
Artist: My Life As Ali Thomas
Label: Independent

This strange performing name caught our attention as the opening act for Part Time Musicians at Moose Bangkok on Apr 2. It’s actually the solo project of Kanyapak “Pie” Wuttara, a bedroom artist who’s just started to upload her tracks to Soundcloud. Despite the low-budget, muffled production values of “Dear Ali” (the YouTube version is recorded live on her friend’s balcony), the talent comes across crystal clear. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and deceptively powerful voice, this single is a real heart-stirrer—we’re hoping this turns out be more than just a hobby.
