Are words and rhymes the new bass and beats? More and more talk, comedy and open mic nights are kicking off around town, and here's how to get involved.

Bangkok Poetry

One of the longest-running literary events in this city, The Bangkok Poetry Night is open to everyone, under a theme that changes each time. It runs every month (or every six weeks) and is hosted by Colin Cheney. Their next event is on April 3 under the theme of "Cover Songs." To take over the mic (under seven minutes each), email BangkokPoetry@gmail.com. If you just want to attend, it’s free and open to all.

Bangkok Lyrical Lunacy

Lovers of wit and wordplay will find themselves traveling around the city with this new up-and-coming poetry event that won’t just settle at one venue. After their last event at The Alchemist, they are hopping to Apoteka on March 7 under the theme of Get Lucky. Keep posted on their Facebook page for news and inspiring word-related posts. To give it your best shot, email BangkokLyLu@gmail.com.

Off Centre Open Mic Comedy Night

Never lacking in colorful characters, the notorious Overstay has been the site of many a tall story. Now the crew also host this open mic comedy night on a regular basis, too! The Off Centre Open Mic kicked off last Feb 13 (though you wouldn’t know much from its event page that displays a big bug doll), and there’ll surely be more to come from them.

PechaKucha

PechaKucha, which means chit-chat in Japanese, is known for its fast-paced 20x20 method where speakers present 20 slides, spending 20 seconds on each one. This week (Feb 27), Launchpad hosts the year’s first PechaKucha Bangkok. In this interview, the event’s new organizer tells BK just why the concept has taken off around the world.

What’s Your Story?

Pretty self-explanatory, this casual monthly meetup aims to be a place where you can share your own life-changing story, with the belief that everyone has an amazing one to tell. Mind you, topics range from the gloomy and mundane to profound. Beside the professional storytellers and speakers at their regular events, the collective also occasionally offers speech workshops.

Improv Bangkok

Dedicated to improvised comedy, a comedy format made famous by the TV show Whose Line is it Anyway, the comedy night by Improv Bankok draws fans by its unscripted and raw performance. Their next show will take place at Ocean Bangkok (Mar 9), or you can catch their monthly night at Overground. The improv troupe also holds regular workshops for performers of all level.

Bombyx Stories
The Bangkok Poetry crew also launched Bombyx Stories with a raconteur/storytelling angle for those who just don’t dig poetry, and prefer strange-but-true stories. The monthly night's recent indefinite postponement left many wishing for its return, but we suggest you keep an eye on their Facebook for good news.
