5 Singapore stories you may have missed this weekend (Sep 19-21)
It was an eventful weekend in Singapore, from a hazy Grand Prix to money issues in Bintan and the latest parade of Michelin chefs.
1. Once again, Singapore was consumed with F1 fever this weekend as Lewis Hamilton sped his way to victory. It’s the seventh win of the season for British driver Hamilton and sees him top of the Formula One leaderboard. Singer Jennifer Lopez also wrapped up the weekend with a concert featuring her classic hits like “Waiting for Tonight” and “Jenny From The Block”.
2. Pop-up restaurant 4XFour is back in Singapore in November, bringing a host of Michelin starred names like Danish chef Henrik Yde of Kiin Kiin and Mads Refslund of Noma in Copenhagen. 4XFour will run in conjunction with the Savour food festival with a host of champagne brunches, four-course lunches and degustation dinners.
3. Frequent weekend travelers to Bintan may have to start their journey with a trip to the currency exchange as the island has stopped accepting Singapore dollars. Apparently due to an Indonesian government policy, several resorts have reverted to payment in rupiah only, including popular hotels Banyan Tree and Nirwana Gardens.
4. It’s that time of the year again, when the haze descends on Singapore and the N95 masks start selling out around the island. This weekend saw PSI levels hovering above 50 (still within the “moderate” range) but burning spells in the East added to a feeling of deteriorating air quality.
5. The Singapore medal tally for the Asian Games has begun with Singaporean fencer Lim Wei Wen securing our first medal with a bronze place in the men’s individual competition. Swimming darling Joseph Schooling also just picked up a bronze for the 200m butterfly. The 17th annual Incheon 2014 Asian Games run till Oct 4.
