Eleven bridges are planned for construction on Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River by 2020, at a cost of over B50 billion. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong announced that the Transport Ministry’s plan had just landed on the desk of the cabinet for approval but also stated that the plan is not part of the cabinet’s B2-trillion infrastructure project. Priority will be given to building bridges in Bangkok’s Kiak Kai area, Pathum Thani’s Sam Khok area and Nonthaburi Province’s Tha Nam Nont area. According to a survey quoted by the finance minister, the number of vehicles crossing the river will increase from 17.9 million per day (2011 figures) to 22.7 million per day in 2021.
