100km-long flood tunnel
There’s a Thailand Underground and Tunnelling Group (TUTG) at the Engineering Institute of Thailand. Predictably, these guys really, really believe in tunnels. As a result, TUTG chairman Suchatvee Suwansawat has announced that a massive 100km-long tunnel should be built from Bang Pa-in (Ayutthaya) to Samut Prakan province. It would take two years to build and drain waters to the Gulf of Thailand, avoiding a repeat of this year’s flood. Most interestingly, the plan for the tunnel is a double deck structure where the the upper deck would be open to road traffic and turned into a floodway only when needed.
