The second week of November brings one of Vientiane’s largest celebrations, Boun That Luang (That Luang Festival). Falling on Nov 10 this year, the event involves what seems like the entire population of Vientiane, in their traditional costumes, gathering at Laos’ national symbol, the That Luang Stupa, where hundreds of monks line up to accept alms and floral votives. There are also cultural showcases, folk performances, a trade fair and fireworks. More information at www.tourismlaos.org.
