The approval for an air operator’s certificate (AOC) means the airline can further its application for operating permits and slots for international flights, paving the way for it to launch Thailand's first long-haul low-cost carrier.

However, the starting date for commercial operations is not confirmed at this stage. It was originally chartered for mid-2014, but the current political situation could cause further delays.

Air Asia X currently flies out of Kuala Lumpur to destinations in Japan, China, India and Australia. In fact, you can already book connecting flights on Air Asia X from Bangkok, stopping through KL, but rates just aren't competitive because of the Bangkok-KL leg (not to mention the hassle of a stopover). Moreover, don't hope for dirt cheap rates even when Air Asia X comes to our town. Even a one-way KL-Tokyo flight is currently B10,000 if you book a couple months in advance.

Following this news, the airline has announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive, Nadda Buranasiri, who has extensive experience in international management.
