Sapporo Snow festival returns in February
The world-famous winter event Sapporo Snow Festival will take place from February 5 to 11.
Back for its 65th edition the world-famous winter event Sapporo Snow Festival is set to take place from February 5 to 11 in Hokkaido, Japan.
What started in 1950 as a group of high school students making snow statues in Odori Park has escalated into a showcase of giant ice and snow sculptures that draws around two million people from around the world.
Sculptures are still built in the original location of Odori Park, but the event is now also held at community dome Tsudome, where you'll find activities like snow slides and snow-rafting, and the main street Susukino, where a spectacular ice sculpture contest takes place.
While you're there be sure to check out Sapporo Beer Garden after a trip to the Sapporo Beer Museum. At this beer hall—an 1890 sugar mill—try the fresh draught beer that Sapporo is so well-known for, including some varieties that you can only get in Hokkaido, accompanied by local specialty dish Mongolian mutton barbeque. It'll definitely keep you warm.
