Kanchanaburi is throwing its annual River Kwai Light & Sound Festival this weekend, which includes the historical World War II light and sound show to the Red Cross Fair. Here are a few other hot spots around town worth visiting.

1. The Old Mine Tunnel

The abandoned mine in Thong Pha Phum district has been opened up as the province's latest attraction, offering visitors a two-kilometer tour through underground caverns that run below a stone mountain dubbed by locals the "Everest of Thailand." Visitors aren’t allowed to tour the tunnel alone, but can contact officials at Wat Saphan Lao who operate a tour with 4x4 cars. Call 099-978-3833 for more information.
 

2. Pha Sawan Waterfall

 
Nestled amid tropical greenery, this destination is perfect for adrenaline junkies not just thanks to the natural beauty but also its rough dirt track that can only be traverssed by 4x4. The waterfall consists of seven levels and takes approximately 40 minutes to reach the top tier,  which is surrounded by remarkable views of the forest. The waterfall is in Thong Pha Phum district.
 

3. Hin Dad Hot Spring

 
Find the water at the waterfall too cold at this time of year? Head to this natural hot spring. First discovered during World War II by the Japanese army, this local onsen comprises three pools ranging from 45-55 degrees celsius. Open daily 6am-10pm. Admission fee is B10 for Thais and B40 for foreigners.
 

4. Safari Park Open Zoo and Camp


Hop on the colorful zoo shuttle bus to become acquainted with a variety of animals. As well as various species of deer both from Thailand and overseas, the nature ark also has a black bear couple, tigers, leopards, lions, zebras, giraffes, ostriches and more. Open daily 9am-5pm. Admission fee is B150 for Thais and B450 for foreigners.
 
 

5. Historic Road Hopping

Pakprak Road is truly a living legend. This 170-year-old community is home to over 100- historic buildings including Siri Osot Building, a home-style museum dedicate to Boonpong Sirvejjabhandu, a Thai merchant who risked his life to secretly help POWs stationed in the area. Also make a stop at the gorgeous cafe Baan Sitthisang (034-514-514) or colorful Hua Hong Coffee (034-511-577) for desserts and coffee.
 

6. In Memory of Death Railway

 
The River Kwai Light & Sound Festival is back for its 70th anniversary, with celebrations running now through Dec 7. With over 200 performers on set this year, expect simulations of the bombing of the bridge, a real vintage steam locomotive on the tracks, and tons of special effects like lasers, sound effects and fireworks. Tickets cost B300 (available at the cite), or call 034-511-778 for reservations.
