There's a gorgeous new Peranakan museum in Phuket
There's more to the island than sun and surf.
Everyone loves Phuket for the beaches, resorts and parties, but those with a bit of a heritage fetish will be glad to know that there's a beautiful new museum to check out on your next trip. Singapore and Penang are already home to great museums that tell the story of the Peranakans. In mid-March, Phuket Town will welcome another museum dedicated to Baba-Nyonya heritage.
PeranakanNitat Museum occupies a stately building dating back to 1907. Once the home of Standard Chartered bank, the building now celebrates the unique Straits Chinese culture that permeates the Strait of Malacca, including Penang, Singapore and parts of Indonesia.
As they're currently in a soft opening phase, check out their Facebook page to confirm their opening hours. Visitors are encouraged to message the museum on Facebook prior to their arrival to book a spot. Entrance fee THB190 ($7.40). Tours are organized eight times per day.
