Five years ago, the Tourism Authority of Thailand helped revive Fuen Heed Hoi Peng Pood, a long-lost, 400-year-old alms giving event that takes place at midnight at Wat Sa Bo Kaeo. Influenced by Burmese and Tai Lue culture, it is believed that in the past Phra Upakut, an enlightened monk, who had supernatural powers to fight monsters, would transfigure into a child monk to bless people before dawn. Offering alms to this child monk was supposed to bring you good luck. The ancient Lanna tradition sees locals organize a festival to pray to an image of Phra Upakut with holy water and flowers, offer food and alms to monks and enjoy cultural shows. Last year, more than 2,000 people attended, so this year the TAT promises the festival will be better organized, taking place from 4.30pm, on Aug 20 and run until the morning of Aug 21 at Wat Sa Bo Kaeo. More information at TAT Phrae 054-521-127. Tour agency Lasallex also has a two-night tour package especially put together for the festival at B9,800, including accommodation, meals, transportation and Nok Air flights from Bangkok.
