And already it's stirring up some controversy on the island. Photos by Panita Thiraphapong

Phuket Town has never been this exciting. Following its receipt of official UNESCO recognition as a Creative City of Gastronomy, the young So Phuket group has launched a campaign called F.A.T. Phuket (Food Art Old Town). Twelve Thai graffiti artists including leading names like Alex Face and Rukkit have collaborated to highlight 12 different elements of Phuket food culture.

The themes take on the various ways in which food relates to Phuket people's lifestyle, like how food is used as a blessing at Baba weddings, the various breakfast choices from Chinese to Muslim and Thai, kopi (coffee) culture, and the many food-focused festivals like Por Tor (with Alex Face's iconic Mardi character portrayed as the festival's signature red turtle dessert), and the famous Vegetarian Festival.

Already, the campaign is stirring up some controversy due to a piece which Alex Face painted on one wall of the newly opened Peranakan Nitat museum, but So Phuket are determined to press on. They'll soon release an art map showing visitors where to find each mural over the course of their three-month show time.

Expect to see this open-air exhibition from now through till the end of June.
