If you’re sick of the Bangkok art scene, a quick drive to Ratchaburi may prove a breath of fresh air. With an aim to make the town a stronghold for contemporary art, Silpathorn ceramic artist Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch has spent eight years revamping the old wooden building his dad bought in 2003 into Ratchaburi’s very first contemporary art gallery, D Kunst (323 Woradej Rd., next to National Museum Ratchaburi, Mueng, Ratchaburi, www.facebook.com/THT.dKunst. Open Wed-Sun 10am-7pm). Wasinburee has preserved most of the details of the century-old building while adding new touches (steel, raw cement, vivid colors). The second and third floors house a café and an exhibition space currently featuring ceramic installations. The building itself was recently recognized as one of the best renovated buildings in 2011 by the Association of Siam Architects. There is also an artist residence to welcome artists who wish to create art pieces to contribute to Ratchaburi. Read our Q&A with Wasinburee here.
