From hot names in chic design to hotels that refuse to change.

It’s high season for tourists right now, but when they leave, we’re all going to need a break. If you like your staycation with a bit of vintage, these boutique and unique retro hotels for the best Instagram moments. In this list, we have hidden hotels that haven't changed in 70 years and the latest in chic design with a touch of the past. If you like mid-century design and colorful flair, these are for you. Forget luxury; we need somewhere to crash in our hippie kit.

Prince Theatre Heritage Stay

Finishing its latest renovations in early 2024, the Prince was a royal casino, opening in 1912. A few years later, silent film boomed and the venue refashioned itself into a standalone cinema. Starting from the 80s, the Prince adapted with the times by screening adult films, but its latest iteration brings a multifunctional quality to the retro hostel. The main lobby includes an event area complete with an elevated wooden stage, plush red curtains, and a floor-to-ceiling projector. Rooms start at the B600-B700 range, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of their local movie screenings or performances.

Miami Hotel

With pink pastel hallways and ovoid windows, the Miami Hotel in Bangkok is a dream destination for Instagrammers looking for 1960s glam without a big price tag. Rooms here start at B1,300, and the on-theme rooms feature classic flair. If you are going for somewhere to shoot in bell bottoms and your latest hippie-chic outfit, this is the ideal place because nowhere in Bangkok does the 60s vibe like this spot.

Old Capital Bike Inn

For 15 years, Old Capital Bike Inn this space is inspired by vintage bikes, so you get a complimentary bike for night tours. The exterior looks a little bit like a Spanish-style villa, but the interiors are very Thai-style vintage—with warm yellows and greens bordering on pastels. It’s family-run and warm and welcoming with genuine local insights. Rooms start at around B3,000 per night.

Josh Hotel

A cheap stay with rooms starting at around B1,300 per night, the mid-century chic Josh Hotel was established in trendy Ari in 2018. The mid-century style—rounded corners with hard whites and wood bases—bleeds a little into the sixties with kitschy art and photos. With a cafe and two cool bars, don’t miss Kaffa for high-quality coffee and Instagram-worthy moments in their dining area, complete with an old-school photobooth. At night, hit The Key Room No. 72, a concealed speakeasy that rolls the conceptual clock back to the turn of the century.

Bangkok Publishing Residence

A splash of art deco on Lan Luang Road, this is an adults-only—thank god—hotel with books. An exclusive boutique hotel with a vintage charm, this spot was once a printing house and home to a publishing family. Catering only to adults, it offers just eight beautifully decorated rooms with modern amenities, and it doubles as a mini-museum celebrating its rich publishing legacy. Rooms start around B5,200 per night.

Public House

The explosion of green at the end of Soi 31 became one of Phrom Phong’s most stylish hotel spots in 2022 after extensive renovations. The hotel features a blend of modern industrial and mid-century design in the rooms and local artists in the lobby. With rooms starting at around B3,500 per night. The food at Fest has been on the up since its creation, and you can find plenty of interesting events there; recently they host Bangkok’s Fuckup Nights speaking event, and next month there’s a bluegrass meetup. For staycation purposes, it finds itself at a junction near dining staples like Sri Trat, Peppina, and the new Kenny’s, but they’ve also got plenty of nightlife nearby with OFTR and Alonetogether Bar just outside.

Amdaeng Bangkok Riverside Hotel

A little bit on the touristy side, this space, with rooms for B3,600 per night, is found along a curve of the Chao Phraya River, just north of Icon Siam. Amdaeng is a striking rust-red building featuring a small courtyard pool and a 360-degree rooftop bar. While it is retro in nature, the décor feels distinctly Thai, with teak wood, dark leather, chandeliers, and spiral staircases. If you want a riverside staycation, you can wake up to the sight of boats passing your window and chill in a classic clawfoot tub.

The Standard

Admittedly, this one is on the pricier side of this list, but you can’t deny their retro cred. With rooms starting at around 5,300, The Standard was a huge get for Bangkok when it opened in 2022—a slice of retro futurism that’s just as known for its parties as its hospitality. To couple with its chic aesthetics, this hotel is home to some of the area’s finest dining and nightlife venues: Mott 32, Standard Grill, Sky Beach, and of course you’re in Mahanakhon. For the jetset, it’s a hotel brand that knows design and service, but for those of us in Bangkok, every week this space is putting on events that bring the city’s stylish out for a wild night.

Atlanta Hotel

This one is a bit of a Bangkok legend—in that a lot of people know about it but very few people have actually stayed there. And there’s a reason for that. First off, it’s in Nana, but secondly, they’re really, really retro, in that they’ve barely changed in 70 years and take reservations by phone. There’s a lot of talk about places that are “hidden” but this hotel seems like it genuinely doesn’t want you to find it. Found at the far end of Soi 2 and with rooms for B900 a night, this space has spawned a lot of column inches from curious travel writers, but most of their guests are loyal returning customers. With a sign outside saying “Sex Tourists Not Welcome”, it’s a wholesome Nana oddity that seems to never die.
