A party that brings out the best in us

The local events scene is booming, whether you'll admit it or not. Tropika, the latest events brand to hit the town, is all about inclusivity and sustainability, and promises to paint the town green come Dec 2. Their inaugural self-titled party will underscore larger-than-life messages about mindfulness, sustainability and inclusivity, with a smashing selection of music and eats in the lush surrounds of Fort Canning Park.

It may be the inaugural edition, but fab things are coming our way. From 2-11 pm, expect an awesome line-up of wholesome eats, multinational beats—from Brazilian funk to African house—and just all-round good vibes. Headlining this one-day affair is Berlin-based DJ Daniel Haaksman and Italian multi-instrumentalist Gabriele Poso, whose compositions include the blending of afro-Latin and soul. This event also sees homegrown talents coming together—local visual/sound duo NADA will perform nostalgia-inducing re-interpretations of old Southeast Asian songs, while ensemble group The Beatroot Ensemble will dish up a 90-minute act exclusively curated for the event. Providing support on the decks are familiar names DJ Funk Bast*rd of Darker Than Wax and Syndicate co-founder DJ Kiat.

At the core of the event, though, is the push for equality and exposure, and socially conscious practices. Aside from the music and eats, sit in on panel discussions exploring more serious themes—Haaksman and Poso will speak on the state of the global music industry; while spoken word poet Deborah Emmanuel and Audrey Perera, festival director of inclusive performing arts festival True Colours, will offer insights of the marginalised in developing countries. All in all, going beyond the music and food.

Tropika’s 1st edition takes place Dec 2 at Fort Canning Hill, River Valley Rd. Tickets are $35 (inclusive of a drink) until Nov 30. More info here
